Dog Bites

There are more than 4 million dog bites per year in the U.S.A.   More than 300,000 individuals with these injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms.

Dog bites are frightening, but in most cases, individuals do very well.

Dr. Altman has a special interest in treating dog bites, and has treated hundreds of these injuries in his career.   Typically, patients with smaller or moderate dog bites can contact our office directly for treatment.  Patients with larger or more severe bites might first go to the emergency room and then consult with Dr. Altman after it is determined that the individual is stable.  In rare situations, when possible, amputated tissue should be retrieved.  One of Dr. Altman's patients who suffered a severe bite to her ear was featured on the Discovery Health Channel.

Most dog bite victims will need to be up to date on tetanus vaccine, and some will require antibiotics such as Augmentin.

Please call if you have any questions or are in need of treatment.
